The Green Hairstreak butterfly is used as the BCM Environs logo for a variety of reasons. Most of the 60 or so butterfly species found in Britain are much reduced, primarily due to dramatic changes in habitat over the past 40 years. However, Green Hairstreak populations continue to survive where their habitats are appropriately and sensitively managed.

Environmental support at all stages of a development scheme facilitates the successful completion of the project. Therefore, the life-cycle stages of this butterfly are analogous with those of these projects.

The sequence of activities on a project.

In this instance the crossing of Spout Burn, a wooded stream valley on the Scotland- Northern Ireland Pipeline project, is used to illustrate the key stages of a pipeline construction pipeline, but the same stages can be applied to the implementation of any such development.

These key stages can be defined as:

Preparation – the initial stage of a project. By "getting it right on the way in" i.e. by appropriately planning and preparing the chances of the project being successful are maximised. This applies equally to all types of project.

Construction – the "crucial" stage of the project in terms of the project management of infrastructure projects, such as pipeline ones. It is the stage in which the main features of the project are created. In other instances the equivalent would be the creation of the hard landscaping – the "muck-shifting" stage.

Restoration – the final stage of a project, during which the area affected by the project is either restored to its previous state in the instance of a pipeline project. Again, the equivalent would be the creation of the soft landscaping – the planting, fencing, etc..

The following sequences of images are taken from various pipeline projects and where selected to illustrate these key stages. Click the image to view.
